ENGLISH

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Reading

  • Read increasingly challenging material independently, including a wide range of fiction and non-fiction from a variety of genres, historical periods, forms and authors
  • Explore english literature, pre-1914 and contemporary: including prose, poetry, drama, Shakespeare and seminal world literature
  • Develop understanding of challenging texts through learning new vocabulary, using context and dictionaries
  • Make inferences and referring to evidence in the text to help build understanding
  • Use knowledge of purpose, audience and context to convey meaning within a text
  • The study of work by a range of authors, including studying at least two authors in depth per year

Writing

  • To write accurately, fluently, effectively and at length, for a range of purposes and audiences
  • To explore writing essays, stories, scripts, poetry and other imaginative writing
  • To develop notes and scripts for talks and presentations
  • To learn to summarise and organise material and apply growing knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and text structure to each piece of writing
  • To plan, draft, edit and proof-read each piece of writing

  • Pick up new vocabulary and grammatical tools from books and other texts read, using them within writing and speech
