Test Overview:
Time: The standard numeracy and literacy test will last approximately 48 minutes each.
Attempts: For both numeracy and literacy you are allowed three attempts. The first attempt of both tests is free and the second and third attempt will cost £19.25 each
If you fail your third attempt, in either numeracy or literacy, you will not be able to book any further resits for 24 months from the date of the second resit (last failed attempt).
Numeracy:
The numeracy skills test consists of 28 questions.
There are 12 mental arithmetic questions and 16 written questions (written arithmetic and written data). All questions carry 1 mark.
The pass mark for the numeracy skills tests are calibrated statistically against a benchmark test. A test with slightly harder questions will have a slightly lower pass mark and a test with slightly easier questions will have a slightly higher pass mark.
The numeracy skills test is divided into 2 areas:
- Mental arithmetic section
Written section (written arithmetic and written data)
Mental Arithmetic Section
In this section of the numeracy test you will have 18 seconds to answer each question. You will not be allowed to use a calculator.
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Time
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
- Proportions involving fractions, decimals and percentages
- Measurement, including money, distance, area and volume
- Conversions
Written Section
In this section of the numeracy test there are 16 questions. 7 of the questions will assess data and 9 assess arithmetic. There is an overall time limit of 36 minutes for this section. You will have access to an on-screen calculator.

Literacy:
The literacy professional skills test is divided into 4 sections. The total number of marks available ranges from 41 to 49, depending on the test. These are broken down as follows:
- spelling section – 10 marks
- punctuation section – 15 marks
- grammar – 10-12 marks
- comprehension section – between 10 and 12 marks
Spelling section
In this section, you will be presented 10 sentences, each containing a missing word to be tested. Each spelling carries 1 mark.
Punctuation section
Punctuation is assessed using a text approximately 200 words long containing 15 punctuation errors. You have to insert the correct punctuation. Each correction carries 1 mark.
Grammar section
Grammar is assessed using a text in which you have to make a block of text complete by adding a whole or part sentence from 4 options given. You will construct a short continuous prose passage in this way. Each correct insertion carries 1 mark.
Comprehension section
The test uses texts such as documents published by local and national government bodies, schools and the educational press. Extracts from websites and national newspapers are also used.
This section tests your ability to:
- identify main points in a text
- distinguish between facts and opinions
- retrieve facts and key points
- make inferences and deductions
- evaluate meaning and status
This section carries 10-12 marks.

If you have attempted either of the QTS Skills Test previously, please make a note of how many attempts you have left. If possible, bring your results sheets with you to your first session. If you have a QTS skills test booked, please make a note of your test date in the booking form.
Tuition can take place in your home or in the classroom based in Billericay.
